Engines, which use a distributor-type injection pump. In 2000, the Pumpe Düse (PD, variously translated "pump nozzle", "unit injector", "pump injector") TDI engine began to appear in Europe, eventually going to North America a few years later.The German Pumpe Düse design was a reaction to the development of high-pressure common rail fuel injection systems by competitors - an attempt by the Volkswagen Group to create an in-house technology of comparable performance that would not require any royalties to be paid - of course the TDI stands for Turbo-charged Direct Injection (a trade mark of the VW group).
As PEOPLELOVE says the modern full synthetic engine oils excellent & will outlast "normal" oils. I use full synthetic Castol Edge 5W/30 for my VW Golf TDI (PD) SE 130 - recomended by VW for PD engines. It is very expensive at around £48 for 4 Litres but will last for extended (recommended by VW) oil change periods of 20,000 mile. The oil filter is changed every 7 - 8,000 miles - a must on the PD / TDI engines.
