You dont have to worry about it in Canada.

not at all, we are lucky here.

maybe he needs to relocate to Canada...

Well being our government seems more open to helping someone from outside of our country...he would probably get better attention than a Canadian born citizen. We all have our issues no matter what country.
So why did he did he do everything he could to get arrested?

"I wanted to make it known that this wasn't for monetary reasons, but for medical reasons," he says.

That's right James Verone says he has no medical insurance.

He has a growth of some sort on his chest, two ruptured disks and a problem with his left foot.

He is 59-years old and with no job and a depleted bank account.

He thought jail was the best place he could go for medical care and a roof over his head.

Verone is hoping for a three year sentence.

He'd then be able to collect Social Security when he got out, and says he'd head for the beach.

"I've already looked at a condominium. I've spoken to a realtor, on Myrtle Beach," he says.

He admits his story is unusual and says he wouldn't recommend anyone else do what he did, but James Verone says he has no regrets.

He says he is getting good medical care now, but the jail doctor accused him of manipulating the system.

"If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care then I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care," he admits.

Verone may have a little problem with his plan.

Because he only demanded one dollar and didn't have a weapon police charged him not with bank robbery, but larceny, so he might not get as much time in the slammer as he was hoping for.

I bet they give him a suspended sentence and probation and that's it.

    you're probably right!

I've seen other cases of the same thing in my experience with medical reports, prisoners get very good medical care and everything is paid for.

wonder why he did not go to an emergency room of the nearest hospital? Tax payers will have to foot the bill either way it goes!
The United States is the only wealthy industrialized Nation who does not have a Universal Heath care System.Health care costs in the US. grew more in the US. under managed care in 1990-1996 than any other industrialized Nation with single payer universal health care. The quality of health care in the US. has deterirorated under managed care. Access proplems have increased. The number of uninsured has dramatically increased. (10 Million-to 43.5 Million from 1989-1996) increase of 2.4%from 1989-1996- 16% in 1996 and increasing each ear. The level of satisfaction with Us Health care system is lowest of ony industrialized Nation.

Corporations are able to buy Politians through our campaign finance system and control the media.
I feel sorry for that man and many others in his situation. I am ashamed of my country!
The financial situation is the world is getting pretty terrible. There are many desperate people out there and I think we will see much more of this type stuff in the news in the near future.

I'm glad I can rely on God to get me though the toughest times, it always seems like no matter how bad things are some opportunity seems to open up to me.

The cost of medical insurance is ridiculous as well, some politicians need to come up with something better than Obama care, I hope...
As you may know in the UK we have the National Health Service (NHS) for all.
Ann, Where do get your facts from?
"The United States is the only wealthy industrialized Nation who does not have a Universal Heath care System."

That is incorrect. There are only 3 countries on the planet that have somewhat of a universal state-paid health system. Canada. Cuba and North Korea. All other countries either have a two-tier system or a user-pay only system with exceptions made for the under class.

I'd enjoy a debate on this subject if you like. As a Canadian, I can give you the straight goods on universal health care system.

I got the information on the Net. When I lived in Germany we had Socialized Medicine like many European Countries do, that is different than Universal Healthcare.

What are your definitions of "socialized" and "universal" ?
    Ann

Socialized medicine is a single payer Gvt.run and delivered system. Universal Healthcare is where everone gets coverage and Gvt. pays for access. Provider and facilities mostly private
