    A syllable is the sounds in a word.  Like the word, auto, that word has two syllables, au to. Bread has only one syllable as it only has one sound. Mature has two syllables mat ture, two sounds. the word, happen, has two syllables. Congratulate has con grat u late has four syllables. So you only need to remember a syllable is the sounds in a word.
