Take a trip to lowes or home depot ,they have a great selection of books on this type of project. Visiit a park with out door wood structures  bring your camera  these structures have several things going for them,first being they are simple and sturdy in construction,made for all weather and to last.Keep it efficent and simple but do it right and dont cobble together some piece of junk that becomes a fire hazard.
