Are we saved by faith alone?

Hans, Kreijns, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I am not trying to create doubt in your mind. We ARE saved by grace, only by grace and by nothing but grace. I’m sure we both agree to this. I am just trying to encourage a little deeper understanding of what we hold so dearly. How do we harmonize what we know with other passages such as, “… faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:16-17 NIV. “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” James 2:26 NIV
Since God has clearly said in His Bible that faith alone is dead how can many of our religious friends say, “We are saved by faith alone.”? We are talking about harmonizing the Scriptures: How can our salvation be by grace alone and still be by faith alone and by repentance alone and by our confession…?

DOES THE BIBLE CLAIM TO BE GOD’S WORD?
- In the New Testament we find many verses that make the claim that the Bible came from God.
- II Peter 1:21 “...men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”.
- II Peter 1:25 “But the word of the Lord stands forever. And this is the word that was preached to you.”
- II Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is God-breathed...”
- I Thessalonians 2:13, “...you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God...”
- Galatians 1:11, 12 “...the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I...received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.”
- I Corinthians 14:37, “...what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command.”
- Matthew 10:20, “...it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”
- These verses show clearly that the New Testament claims to be God’s Word.

We need to read no further than the first 10 words of the Bible to learn of the claim that,
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1. The Bible stated at least 53 times that “God created”.

Vajradhars, I’m sorry that you didn’t get many answers to your question. I guess I’m like most of your readers, I must confess I don’t know but I can say this, the NIV version of the NT. Lists 14 verses where hell is discussed.

HOW COULD WE COMPARE THE EXISTENCE OF GOD WITH EVOLUTION?

Robertgrist,
Thank you for answering my question. May I respond to your comment?
You said, “COMPARING THE PRESENCE OF GOD AND EVOLUTION? THESE ISSUES DEMONSTRATE NO CONFLICT IN MY MIND.” I don’t understand how you could have no conflict. In my mind if we accept the God of the Bible we must accept his words which conflict drastically with the evolution theory.
In Ex 20:11 God shows us that the creation process took only one week. “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and ALL THAT IS IN THEM,
but he rested on the seventh day.’ This of course begs the question, “How long was the creation days?” If the days of creation were a million years long, and Adam was created on day 6 as stated in the Bible, and evidently lived through day seven. This would make Adam at least 1 million years old. Gen 5:5 NIV “Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.” Gen 1:14 “And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky mark…days… the fourth day.’ If each day equaled a thousand years the purpose of his creating the stars failed. If each day equaled a thousand years, each nigh would have equaled at least 500 years which in turn would have killed all of the life on earth.
Heb 4:3 “His work has been finished since the creation of the world.” I think we need help to understand these verses differently that what the literal meaning shows them to be.

• It has been said that both God’s existence and evolution are religions which require faith to believe.
• It takes no more faith to believe in God existence then it takes to believe in a house a tree an ocean or a fact from history. We say, “We know that’s a tree!” Because of the mountain of evidence we can also say, “WE KNOW THERE IS A GOD!”
• Evolution is a fantasy just like “The Three Pigs” and “Alice in Wonderland”.
• God’s existence is a clear, solid, scientific fact that as God says, only a fool can denied it. Psalms 14:1; Psalms 53:1.

If we need books of doctrine, catechisms, books of Mormon etc. why does the Bible say the Scriptures thoroughly equipped for every good work 2 Tim 3:16-17 and gives us everything we need for life and godliness 2 Peter 1:3?

Carmazable, Do I conclude from your statement that "the other books", not inspired are not needed? It seemes to me that if a man made doctrine requires more than what the Bible requires, it requires too much. If it requires less than what the Bible requires, it requires too little. And if it requires exactly what the Bible requires, we don't need it because we have the Bible. Do you agree?

WHY ARE PEOPLE TO BE BAPTIZED?

Randy,
It seems to me that there is some type standard to help us understand communication. If we can interpret what others say any way we want then there is no limit to the conclusions we draw. Words have a meaning. Words are defined by the way they are used. If we decide to interpret green for red or go for stop we are likely to have difficulty traveling through town. Why would anyone want to place his own (interpretation) on words God said? God did not say that baptism is an outward sign of an inward grace. But he said we are saved at the point of baptism.

There is only one glue that is strong enough to guarantee that a marriage will not break up. That is the God glue. The more the two of you commit your lives to God the stronger your love will be for each other. Start by giving your life completely to him and by showing her that you will love her and provide for her no matter what she does.

We need to read no further than the first 4 words of the Bible to learn of the claim that, “In the beginning God…” Genesis 1:1.
The Bible does not begin with a defense of God’s existence, but rather it appears that its author took for granted that everyone would already know that there is a God.
The word “God” is mentioned 3,954 times in the NIV Bible.

Matt 24:35-39 NIV
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

When God requires faith for salvation does he teach the necessity of Baptism?

When God requires faith for salvation does he teach the necessity of Baptism?
Mark 16:15 teaches salvation by faith 16:16 by baptism
John 3:16 teaches salvation by faith 3:5 by baptism
Acts 16:31 teaches salvation by faith 16:33 by baptism
Rom 3:22 teaches salvation by faith 6:3, 4 by baptism
Gal 2:15 teaches salvation by faith 3:26 by baptism
Eph 3:17 teaches that Christ dwells in our hearts by faith 4:4 by baptism
1 Peter 1:9 teaches salvation by faith 3:21 saved by baptism
Therefore the scriptures plainly show that to be saved we must have both faith and baptism. We simply can not go through the Bible cafeteria style choosing what we like and throw away the rest.

Daren, Thanks again for considering my thoughts. Yes I agere that salvation requires faith and baptism is a sign of spiritual faith. My point is that God requires both for a person to become a Christian. People often say, "I accepted Christ and became a Christian at... then some time later I was baptized." That's not the way the Bible speaks. Faith always comes before true baptism but true conversion comes at the point of baptism. Notice again what the Scripture says about baptism.
I Pet. 3:21 It saves us
Acts 2:38 To receive remission of sins
Acts 22:16 To wash our sins away
Rom. 6:3-6 To get into Christ; To have unity;
To get a new life; To crucify self; To be resurrected
Rom 6:4, 5 To receive a new birth; To become free from sin
I Cor. 12:13 To get into the body
Col. 2:11, 12 So sin can be circumcised from our heart
Gal 3:27 To clothed ourselves with Christ
If the things listed above come at baptism then how can we claim these things before. Baptism is no more important that faith, confession and repentance but the others takes us TO the point of salvation. Baptism puts INTO Christ.

FreedomFighter, Why do you think these baptism passages are Holy Spirit baptisms? Remember Eph 4:5 says there is only one baptism. Do you believe that water baptism should not be practiced today? Does reactionary mean they are not important to received salvation? Thanks again for your comments. Norm1
