    Crude oil is created from vegetation that once covered the earth over 100 million years ago. The molecular structure of the hydrocarbons and other compounds present
    in fossil fuels can be linked to the leaf waxes and other plant molecules of
    marine and terrestrial plants believed to exist during that time period.

    The common thought is as given by Raider8723. However, there is a growing minority view that oil may not be a fossil fuel at all. The theory is that somehow the compression of the rock strata is continually forming the oil and that is why we keep finding new pockets of gas and oil. Just proves that there is always more to learn
