It's probably too much information for your computer to handle all at once. Sometimes you just have to be patient.

its been going for 4hr and its at 16%
What kind of computer do you have? You may have minimal storage left on it and your computer is trying to find places to store the incoming information. When was the last time you cleaned your computer of unused files and defragged it?
You're right, PS3 connects to the internet on it's own,yes? I do not know PS3's as I do not own one. I can not help you with this issue. Have a tech take a look at your PS3 and see if there's an issue with it. We are not PS3 on line support.
