The Roman catholic church had a big hand in it.Several books disappeared because they didn't concur with what they wanted christians to believe.There are other theologicans that will answer this better than me,but that's what I have heard.

Interesting how the new testament books are “The Gospel according to…” and gospel is defined as meaning "good news”. Seems to me that writing a book entitled “The Gospel according to (your name here}.” I think that would draw a crowd at a book festival. I like all of the religion stories I know because they are part of the whole adventure in finding and knowing God within. Even the pagan myths and early cultural steps toward defining moments are worth knowing about. It’s part of our common history within you waiting to be remembered.

Many religious leaders took turns deciding what would go in the bible. Men wrote the books and verses you see in the bible. Men decided what the people would know and what they wouldn't. That's why it took centuries to piece the book together, in between taking it apart and putting it together again.
