Well if you are speaking of a formal or semi formal night out, I can see black as elegant.. The way the question was presented, it seems we are talking about everyday 'around town' fashion. I don't see women in the summer dedicated to brown and black, not to say or imply its not worn but not as the trend for summer. I live about 1/2 hour from the beach just south of San Francisco..
Vinny, I realized after I wrote it, that it may depend on the geographical area in which you live. I was thinking of adding " I don't know about your area, but here in S.E. Mich, more women wear black all year round than any other color . Just today, the woman across the street was wearing a black top and black slacks to trim bushes.
This area, in S.E. Mich is a depressed area, economically and never did have much sense of style. In pubiic, most people look like they just got out of bed. Guess I'm an oddity, b/c I wear matching clothes, shoes, errings, rings, shoes. I wear darker clothes in the winter, and light colored clothes in the summer.

HA! Then I bet you stand out in the crowd as the best dressed woman in S.E. Michigan!! I know your area, actually I'm from Ohio.. Southwest Ohio. They have the depresses there too. :)
I wonder that myself sometimes and have come to the conclusion that black makes one look thinner. There are so many cool fabrics out there now that it's easier to find summer clothes in the darker colors. I think that at night it's alright - I can do that. During the day however, I wear tons of white and beige and enjoy summer dresses the most.

Yvonne57 I think you hit the nail right on the head about the black & brown making people appear thinner....it can hide quite a few "sins"! Some people just do like black though...I see a lot of that in Chicago here especially the teenage Hispanic girls plus they literally pour themselves into their clothing, especially their jeans! Most of them look like "whores in training" to me...Chicago's a great place just to peoplewatch!

I don't think it's only the Hispanic old hipster even though I know you are using that as an example. I think in that case it's poor parental guidance. I see young girls dressing like that all the time - I think it's called Goth.
For me - It's called 470 calories for a Dairy Queen Cone!!!

Just my opinion mind you, but I noticed a few ladies in the office I used to work in wearing black and brown all year round. The reason I believe was because it looked more professional. I guess the weather didn't have anything to do with it. I do know that they always looked dreary and hot. Not my style at all, give me fuscia, magenta, scarlet, electric blue! Love those colors.

I think you will see more black at night at dinner downtown in some swanky restaurant.
