    is zero a number ?

When us older people were in grade school, we were taught that zero is not a number, but that it is a place holder. Now, I've been told by the bank and by young kids that zero is a number, b/c they need it in the computer world so they won't run out of numbers. I guess it's been recruited into service. What do you think about zero ? Should we teach toddlers and pre-preschoolers to count from zero to ten ?

that's only early computer language in the 60s

We teach negative numbers and use a number line with zero at its center. While starting at 1 makes more sense (maybe cuz I'm old), the concept of zero should be part of math curriculum, not just its function as a place holder

Good thing we have you here. :)

I'm sure I could name some people who would disagree with you, Ducky, but thank you.

    You're NOT old!
    Bob/PKB

    I feel old...

Maybe a new moderator will rejuvenate us all!

    I respected Ducky beyond words.
    Clonge

Me too. Not meant to be offensive. Someone like Colleen would spice things up a lot. I miss her.
    Bob/PKB

I miss Colleen as much as I'd miss a festering boil on my backside...not one bit.

@Bob...I just now read Clonge's statement and thought exactly the same thing. "I miss her". Really? I miss the twenty or so members that are gone because of her daily, nasty abuse and the accusations she hurled at them! She is a bad memory. :(
    Clonge

She suspended me a time or two. Often controversial, of course. THAT is what I miss.

Oh no, I should have suspended you so you could have had more fun. What a missed opportunity! :)
    Clonge

It's a good thing you didn't. akaQA is the ONLY fun I have in my life!

    Well, that's pretty pathetic. I hope you're joking :(

Clonge, go back to Voltare's question about homosexuality/sin/Bible, or see Bulletman recent update about it. READ EVERY WORD she who must not be named wrote, and explain to me how you could possibly long for that kind of, for lack of a better word, cr*p.
I miss a lot of good people she harassed and censored, too, Ducky. Can't fault them for leaving, though.

Some thrive on trash talking others....some thrive on 'listening' to it. She hurt a lot of people for no good reason and is directly responsible for the major decrease in participation of a once, very busy site.

It's nice her steadfast followers went with her, though, and others got to know her well enough to turn away. She actually sent some emails to me trying to establish a (fake) "friendship". I think it was when some of her pals spit out the Kool Aid....if that makes sense

Interesting. She attempted a "new, chatty friendship" with me too. I didn't bite either.

I picture a tremendously unhappy individual

    Absolutely. :(

Recent years the high school football schedules begin with week zero. Makes no sense to me.

    mycatsmom

    now that's just ridiculous.
    Bob/PKB

    Practice game?
    zorro

No real games. I remember for past several years and just could not understand it. Makes no sense at all. Who let people make these type of decisions. They did change it last year.
    Bob/PKB

It doesn't make sense to me, either. When you play a game, it counts as 1 game. The first game is 1, not 0. Weird

....teach them to start early to amass as many as they can in their saving/investment account.

When a baby is born,it does not become 1 year old until the end of 1 year,,time frames have to start at Zero,,,Comments?????..>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<..

    day, week, month....
All of these have value of time and are Fractions of a year. :-)

Terry, good thinking. I guess zero has it's place.

How about an infinity number? How does that get displayed in these days?  That was so cool to write out years ago!

I gave you a gold infinity.

....not if it is followed by 6 zeroes.

    I liked that song.

How would one ever reach a hundred years old if we did not count noughts,??

    mycatsmom

that's a good thought, Hect. You're on the ball today . I guess at the turn of every decade, there is a zero.
