If you have any kind of decent anti-virus software, it should do a scan of the downloaded file before you are even able to open or run it. If there is a problem, it will notify you. Also, create two accounts on your machine, one administrative and one not. Use the non-administrative account for your day-to-day activities and just input the administrative password when you need to. This helps cut down the viruses that try to install themselves, since administrative authority is needed to install anything. They'll need your permission to install. Mind you, some may install anyway, but it significantly reduces the number.
