    WHY DO DEMENTIA PATIENTS GORGE ON FOOD ?

    I suppose because it's something they can recognize.......

    They do not all gorge on food!  In the year before my mother died, she often refused to eat anything.  You need to go to your local Alzeimher/Dementia Association and request all of the information that they have available, in regard to this dreaded disease.  Patients react in very different ways, many behaviors being shockingly different from what they ever were, BEFORE the disease.  Learning all that you can, will not only make it easier on the patient but also on you, assuming you are in regular contact with such a patient.

    My mother had dementia and she had to be fed as she was unable to feed herself, so I don't think gorging is universal.

    It's not. My father-in-law has dementia and he does not gorge himself at all. He still has lovely eating manners even though he is approaching the final stage.

    That is what their mind tell them to do.
