      (7x+8)+(-2x+8)


      You can't add the unknown (7x) to the 8, nor the 2x to the 8, so the (parenthesis) aren't useful here. 
      You CAN add 8 + 8 (16), and you CAN add 2x and 7x ((9x).  That makes the answer 9x + 16
