Have you tried clearing your browser's cache and cookies and re-starting it?
Have you tried performing the task in another supported browser or on another computer to see if it behaves the same?
If you use IE8 or IE9, have you tried disabling the compatibility mode: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=181472 (for some people adding google.com and then disabling it works).
Have you tried both the Standard, and Basic-html (http://mail.google.com/mail?ui=html) versions of Gmail to see if anything changes?
Have you tried temporarily disabling your anti-virus scanner to see if the behavior changes? Don't forget to re-enable it after the test.
Have you tried disabling any other monitoring or internet protection programs (like Net-Nanny) which could be blocking Gmail?
Have you tried disabling any labs features you are using? You can do this for all of them at once by using: https://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0
Have you tried disabling any browser add-ons or (for browser's like Firefox) running in Safe Mode? Have you tried disabling/deleting any browser toolbars (like Bing, Yahoo, etc)?
