round 1044.987 to three significant figures
You could round this number to the nearest "1", which is 1045 (.987 is closer to 1.000 than to 0)
You could round this number to the nearest "10" which would be 1040 (although I don't like this, as 4.987 is so very close to 5, which would mean rounding to 1050).
You could round this number to the nearest "100", which would 1000, as 44.987 is less than 50.000.
General rules for rounding:
1.Round up when the value immediately to the right of your round-to is 5 or more
2.Round down when the value immediately to the right your round-to is less than 5 (even 4.999999)
