A teacher or schoolteacher is a person who provides education for pupils (children) and students (adults). The role of teacher is often formal and ongoing, carried out at a school or other place of formal education. In many countries, a person who wishes to become a teacher must first obtain specified professional qualifications or credentials from a university or college. These professional qualifications may include the study of pedagogy, the science of teaching. Teachers, like other professionals, may have to continue their education after they qualify, a process known as continuing professional development. Teachers may use a lesson plan to facilitate student learning, providing a course of study which is called the curriculum.

A teacher's role may vary among cultures. Teachers may provide instruction in literacy and numeracy, craftsmanship or vocational training, the arts, religion, civics, community roles, or life skills.

A teacher who facilitates education for an individual may also be described as a personal tutor, or, largely historically, a governess.

In some countries, formal education can take place through home schooling. Informal learning may be assisted by a teacher occupying a transient or ongoing role, such as a family member, or by anyone with knowledge or skills in the wider community setting.

A teacher was at one time a very respected individual of our society.  Today, unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be quite the case.  Teachers have invested a lot in their training and education for the betterment of the society and our culture.  The general public sometimes thinks of a teacher as a surrogate-baby sitter, caring for children while parents are at work (some people still have jobs and work in this country, we hope).  In many states there is an Educational Reform which either has gone on, or is currently.  It is long overdue for the system to have an overhaul.  Methods and materials and the Educational Demands of society are changing.  What is not, is the perceptions of the value of an education.  Also,  how vital it is for families to be part of the lives of their children.  Teachers should not be expected to be the parental figures for their students.  Many do, so that the kids have some positive role models in their lives.  Society puts ever-increasing demands upon teachers. When all of these social demands are met, there is even some time and energy to actually do some education!  Kids today come into the classroom with such baggage.  Through no fault of their own, the hand that they were dealt!  It leaves many with voids which must be met to get them through the day.  If people need to get  back to some old fashioned family values.  Spend time with your kids, check their work progress, attend parent open houses, and a show a genuine interest.  Let the child know that you are part of this team.  With the cooperation of parents, schools would really be able to use the resources of all.  This would  insure that the kids get the best that their school system has hired to service them.  Investing in education is not only about how much tax money is paid out to run the operation.  The investment that counts most, is the payment in human-interest in the kids!  We need the most educated workforce in the world more now than ever!  Please be part of the team, and do your part as adults in the lives of your children!
