Could or would this forum survive without the search engines Google and co ? Your thoughts please.

I was curious about this so I tabbed the first three "Answers" pages and found that over half of them were derived from a search engine. I for one would be out of a "post" if there weren't any.

@west-bus...So that darn "Google thing" doesn't work!!! Annoying.

That's a good question West-bus, as much as there are some smart people who volunteer on this site, we would have to have some geniuses here and maybe a couple of rocket scientists to answer some of the technical questions that come through, if these types of questions were not asked, i reckon this site would survive based on the fact that the members here really try and help to the best of their knowledge.

Impossible, I've answered over 11000 questions and I'm willing to bet around 80% of the answers were found via a search engine.

    west-bus

    I wouldn't bet against you Romus. !

Sure it would.  It would simply survive differently.  We would have to rely solely on our "collective intellect".  Judging by some of the information that we glean from many places on the internet, Google included, we might not be too far off anyway. The "facts" that are found and passed along as gospel, are mind-blowing!  (Just like some of my answers)   lol

    LOL, funny Ducky. :)
    west-bus

    That rules me out Ducky.

    Thank you west-bus.

...and it's nice to see you back here.

Probably not unless they had experts online giving advice for things .... without a search engine how could we search :) Go back to books :))

Imagine if technology went down? no one would remember how to look in an encyclopedia....

I own a set of 1881 britanica encyclopeia set :) I ma meant to be fixing them up so they look nice on my shelf but I look at all 25 books and think of all the work I have to put into fixing them :(

The leather has fallen apart unfortunately they all need there spines repaired , lucky it is only the asthetics all the books sewing and the pages are free of marks they are really clean considering the paper they would have been printed on, linen and wood chip..
    FISH-O

    They sound really cool.

I will post some pictures one day :)
    west-bus

Hi wonderdyke, What are books ?
    Deleted User

Books are paper you know in the old days we had books :)The things they tried to make you look at during school.

I have 1881 encyclopedias, they are all leather bound marbled edges, end papers, they all have cords on the spine old fashioned letterpress binding style, they would have been all hand sewn , they are really nice but falling apart, I was a book binder before I got ill, I hope to fix them up some day they sit in my Library sadly looking very tired but when I restore them they will have another 400 years of life plus :)

Oh, West-bus...there is absolutely no way I

could answer 90-95% of the questions I do

    without the Google search engine.

    west-bus

    Only 90-95% ? !!
    Dardaigh

Ha ha...sometimes there are congratulatory threads or things like, "My husband is cheating on me, what should I do"...so I'm giving my personal opinion on things like that, Westy...lol. ;)

Most questions on this site involve information, which is easily obtained by Google. Therefore, I think that without Google, there would have been less answers, and that the questions would have been about more personal issues/opinions.

Google has certainly contributed a lot to akaQA and they themselves have profited from this site.

You mean that Google have profited from akaQA? maybe...
