I have a collection of Hydrangeas and a couple of neighbours who have some spectacular ones not as well. I fertilize in spring with composted earth and a bit of manure. I do this all over the garden beds and flower beds. I have a large collection of Rhodos as well, so the soil is a bit on the acidic side for them.
