Solar energy drives winds that evaporate water from the surface of the oceans and lakes. The water vapor cools as it rises and collects on clouds. When the clouds are full of the rain, also called precipitation, it then falls to the ground as rain, snow, or some other form of precipitation. Rain is part of the hydrologic cycle, which describes dynamic changes in the aquatic environment.
