My grandmother would talk about her Irish family in Catawissa, Missouri. They worked on the railroad and she said they were called ?????. I can't remember the name she used. Thought it started with a C. She always said that the smart workers were the German Engineerers and the Irish workers were this name. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I couldn't find anything else... This calls for a trip to Ireland!

Scotland where a "craic" or "craicker" was a person who talked loudly or boasted. This term was later used to describe white Southerners, particularly those who were poorly educated and possessed little means. Wikipedia

Also “Cracker” referring to white imigrants hired to herd slaves along in work but usually not to beat them. In “Roots,” white imigrants were generally so regarded as an ethnic group.

I don't think the Irish were called Crackers but I'm not sure!
