There are two primary tools available for the bending of conduit. Factory-produced elbows can be used for the conduit size of one and one-fourth inch or larger. However, a hickey bender, a small, circular instrument that is slid over the conduit, is the most commonly used.
Preparing the Conduit
Prior to bending the conduit, burrs created by the cutting of the conduit into the correct size should be removed using a conduit reamer or knife. Next, establish the starting point and where the conduit will change direction. The starting point is where the conduit will be connected to the fitting. The point where the conduit changes direction will be determined by the degree of the bend and its distance.
Bending the Conduit
After ensuring that the change of direction and middle of the bend are accurate, the entire conduit should be laid flat against the floor with the starting point against a wall. The hickey will then be fitted over the conduit and lined up with the area that is to be bent. The hickey bender is then pulled upward, causing the conduit to become vertical around the bend.
