      Apparently it was random.  I watched a documentary a few years ago and this photograph was discussed.

        No they did not know each other.    It took many years to discover who they were.


        The nurse was Edith Shain, but I do not recall the name of the sailor

          If memory serves me right the sailor died a few years ago.
