The perfect tenses describe actions which are complete. They have past, present and future forms and require an auxiliary verb > this would be the word before snowed as snow is the action] the auxiliary verb (meaning helper verb) also makes the sentence sound complete.
Past tense: Yesterday, it had snowed 5 inches by nightfall.
Present tense: It has snowed 5 inches today.
Future tense: By nightfall, it will have snowed 5 inches.
