Most likely a note that bothers them.

I do the same thing.   People turn the radio off when I'm around.

    So, you've heard me!!??

I have heard you for sures, Ducky. I howl.

My dogs howl when I sing ... we sing together.  I consider this a trick just as their dancing is.  My male dog dances like Jack Black and his name is Nacho Libre...

    The song we sing is...

Nacho Libre, Nacho Libre,  How I love I love I love you Nacho Libre.

You are the best dog in all the world.

You are the best dog for this girl.

Pico Lina ... Oh Pico Lina... How I love I love I love you Pico Lina.

You aren't the best dog in all the world.

You are the best dog for this girl... (When you are not eating poop!)

Ha ha! Ben and yes Ducka you are very welcome howl with Mowgli and the motley bunch of coconuts!

Fishy..I tell my cat the same thing..can't sing worth a lick...it scares him (probably insults his ears)lol

Maybe they think the song sucks! LOL!

I thought it was cuz they loved the song.

Some say that it's instinct, others because it bothers their ears. I agree with the opinion that they howl for communication. When I was a kid my brothers and sister would howl until our dog or dogs joined in. Personally it seemed to me like they got so into it and it was an emotional thing? It almost seemed like they were sad? I suppose that we'll never know unless you believe in reincarnation and come back as a dog that can communicate with humans, just don't try howling at us because we just don't get it, lol.

Sometimes I'll howl or move my mouth without making any sound while looking at the dog and she'll howl. She'll also go to her water bowl and bark if it's dry, or go to the refrigerator and bark if she wants you to feed her, or go to the front door and bark if she wants to go out. To the degree our dog's vocal chords allow her to communicate (talk), our dog might not be able to form words, but she definitely talks in her own way.

Yeah, I agree dogs/animals are much more intelligent than science gives them credit for... We'll just have to wait for science to catch up to all us pet owners.

My son who is two howls with the dogs...it is hilarious and the dogs don't seem sad. Our son's nickname is Mowgli.

That's cute FF, my German Sheppard seemed pretty sad when she was done howling. She was pretty old at that point and had hip problems. Maybe she was in pain? Anyhow hope all is well with you...

My dog howls sometimes while he sleeps. It is a high eerie sound.

Uh, that’s kind of scary. Makes MY hair stands on end, anyway.

my husband says the hair on the back of his neck stands up.

They HOWL for a couple of reasons.  One, they don't know the words.  Another, they can't hum.

Reading your question immediately took me back about 67 years ago. We had a beautiful golden coloured spaniel and sometimes a very popular singer at the time would be on the radio. She was Gracie Fields and when she sang "Sally" our dog whose name was also Sally would try to out-sing her. It was for me very funny.

Thumbs Up for You Tube.  And to Jenn, like me, Sally had perfect pitch.

Well, many an interesting answer!  Dogs defintly howl for different reasons. To play, to communicate, to get all of the dogs in the neighborhood to bark and join in...and if they are running away or rubbing their ears on the floor..because the sound they are hearing hurts their amazing hearing.

Just remember where they come from all dogs came from woolfs

May be more aimed at the one doing the singing to try and make them shut up?

If they could remember the words    they wouldn't have to howl backup sound.
