My dogs howl when I sing ... we sing together. I consider this a trick just as their dancing is. My male dog dances like Jack Black and his name is Nacho Libre...
The song we sing is...
Nacho Libre, Nacho Libre, How I love I love I love you Nacho Libre.
You are the best dog in all the world.
You are the best dog for this girl.
Pico Lina ... Oh Pico Lina... How I love I love I love you Pico Lina.
You aren't the best dog in all the world.
You are the best dog for this girl... (When you are not eating poop!)

Some say that it's instinct, others because it bothers their ears. I agree with the opinion that they howl for communication. When I was a kid my brothers and sister would howl until our dog or dogs joined in. Personally it seemed to me like they got so into it and it was an emotional thing? It almost seemed like they were sad? I suppose that we'll never know unless you believe in reincarnation and come back as a dog that can communicate with humans, just don't try howling at us because we just don't get it, lol.

Reading your question immediately took me back about 67 years ago. We had a beautiful golden coloured spaniel and sometimes a very popular singer at the time would be on the radio. She was Gracie Fields and when she sang "Sally" our dog whose name was also Sally would try to out-sing her. It was for me very funny.
Thumbs Up for You Tube. And to Jenn, like me, Sally had perfect pitch.

Well, many an interesting answer! Dogs defintly howl for different reasons. To play, to communicate, to get all of the dogs in the neighborhood to bark and join in...and if they are running away or rubbing their ears on the floor..because the sound they are hearing hurts their amazing hearing.
