      Lets start with common sense : Its FIRE !!!!!!!!!  The glass is a safety feature . So what you wish to know is : Can I play with fire without the safety features installed  ? HMMMMMMMMMMMM Sounds like a 6:00 o'clock news story in the making . You never did say if it was a gas or wood fire place . That would be of interest . Be serious ,you risk all for nothing (the price of the glass) . My question is WHY ????????????? Harmonious outcome is expected if you repair the glass . Otherwise the fire department thanks you for the work .               Bill

        not wood just gas,be nice to go out and replace glass but not possible at moment.

        I understand very well the money issue and replacing the glass. Things to consider before you go down this road . A gust of wind down the stack blows the flame out of the combustion chamber into the house . Next there is the combustion by products issue not being contained . Certainly do not go to sleep with this fire on . No small kids around this . Being serious, I understand wish you the best of luck and pray for good out come . Put some aluminium foil over the broken part if heat is the issue . Fix it when you can . Bill
