Only one spelling error? Did you count the grammar errors? The capitalization miscues? The punctuation snafus? I am the grammar and spelling police and my cells are full, with a huge line waiting. But read daren 1's answer....it's the general consensus.

Try receiving emails from a business partner who gives you hell and comes across as a petulant twelve year old.  Two spelling errors and that is just the beginning!  Apparently "i" is no longer capitalized.

    Oh, the end is near.

    itsmee

The end is near because of I ?
    itsmee

I believe “me” would be grammatically correct.
    FISH-O

The end is near because of the manner in which this person chooses to treat me. If one intends upon portraying themselves as superior the least they can do is make the person on the receiving end of their tirade feel as if they are not in fact, being written the riot act by a twelve year old on the lower end of the curve.
On top of it all, I am doing my job very well and with great care. This particular account is a difficult one. It needs a certain touch. A delicate touch.
To be fair, this person has been treating me badly for quite some time. This is the last straw.

i'm  gulity as well , but what's important is the quality of the answers as well as questions, if you were to talk to me face to face how would you know the difference, besides it's not a spelling contest.

    ThatOneComment

    Again, true.

Daren; You are rarely guilty of it. You put commas where I put dots.

    You can't be serious. ;)
    eggplant

Most don't. At least his spelling is okay, but there's no question mark.

I was told that contractions are not used much in the US. It is used in Australia, but usually only when writing a letter to someone you know. Nowadays it's even used sparingly in stories. Once, we were not allowed to do that.

LOL, was kidding with you. I thought you would pick up on the cant/can't ;)
    mycatsmom

To eggplant, We use contractions all the time here in the U.S. when we write; but we don't write many letters b/c we call or email ppl, or write them on FB. It's too bad letter writing is a lost art. They don't teach cursive anymore, either. That was an art, too.

For the same reason some people can't use punctuation or capitalization.......

    itsmee

My punctuation is terrible. Maybe we should get copy editors to correct our questions and/or answers before we post them. I think Ducka would do a thorough job. : )
    Benthere

    It won't let me TU u !
    jhharlan

Oh, well. I'll consider it done..........Thank you
    mycatsmom

I could be the copy editor :-)

Some come from lack of education ......some now  and some from the habits of texting without spelling with the technology used now a days!!

    ThatOneComment

what ever happened to writing letters
    itsmee

As far as I know you can still buy stamps and stationery.
    mycatsmom

ThatOne---letter writing is a lost art; compounded by the educ system not teaching cursive writing anymore. We used to call it penmanship.

Because People are people and those people either are rushing or just plain lazy! ;-)

I CANT SPALL  and everyone knows it I am with itsme on this let it go we have had this bloddy question on soooooooooooooooooooooooo many times its boring!

My computer has been underling in red when I misspell a word on this site.

no once iss prefict butt their isnant a problim wid mi grammor or me speling.

    facebook

Some people work hard to spell correctly like me
And people like Maz work hard to spell incorrecly.
    Maz

    LOL!

It’s so much faster to not use capitalization. If you’re in a live conversation on the computer, capitalization will really hold you back.

We don’t know the age, education level or weight on akaqa. If teenagers wrote like educated or uneducated adults, we might be in trouble.  If eight year old wrote like adults, it would be even worse.

Our punctuation here is kind of like our face and body type when we meet in person.  We will be known by it.

I think our purpose here is to be understood. In many months, I have rarely been stumped by what someone wrote. I can read through bad spelling. If the spelling is really bad, it might show a state of mind that will alert me to answer a question in a different way.

I never think about my spelling or punctuation ...However,  it was almost impossible for me to get this typed. I thought about spelling. I’m going to just let go of that worry. There’s other things to be concerned about.

    ThatOneComment: Are you a plant?  : )

Some because of an inferior education, others perhaps, none at all. Some might not be native speakers of English; I can understand this. English can be very difficult for "foreigners" to learn. I think that people here should point out these errors without berating the poor spellers. It's better in this forum because of "anonymity", but when someone knows who is writing, the person who sees it, might see that person as being stupid.I don't  know anyone who wants to be perceived this way.

You have a problem with the word, “cant"

Please don’t point fingers. People have their reasons for not being good spellers. I wish people would let go of this.  I guess I’d have to say The Spelling Police are my pet peeve on akaqa.

Let up. Be nice. It’s the holiday season.

    itsmee is grumpy tonight.

I'm with Itsmee on this one.

    FISH-O

It is a serious matter in business.

    This is true.

Proper spelling helps some of us who take the time to answer a lot of questions others ignore. Spelling matters when one wants to be understood. I've proven it before when questions get incorrect answers due to lack of proper spelling by the person asking.
    FISH-O

If someone is asking a technical question about turtles or lizards or fish, I imagine they would take my advise a lot more seriously if the answer was written well as opposed to not. Why would I become lazy and not look up the spelling of a word because this is not business?
    Colleen

Could you imagine if we answered with the same atrocious spelling some people who ask questions show here? They'd never be able to read the answer. In that case, why bother having an akaQA if everyone just got lazy and forgot how to spell or didn't bother to use spell check? No one would get anything out of the questions or answers. Close up shop because akaQA would be useless then. No one can spell but that's OK! Spelling doesn't matter anyway, right?

    Because they've opted for grammar.

Another problem is the fact that this forum is International & English is often not thier native tounge.

    itsmee

My thumb up wouldn’t work today. I hope this isn’t a consistent thing.

Is it not Can't ? It would seem the kettle is calling the pan Sooty Arse.

    Nene43

It is Can't. A contraction for Can not.

but im lazy and i still spell good

    jhharlan

    But you can't punctuate properly.....
    Ducky

    Moderator
@ ThatOneComm..Correction: "well" not "good" and you don't use punctuation properly and you don't capitalize your words properly and you forgot a question mark and you stuck in the word "like" where it does not belong..shall I go on? You can only criticize spelling, grammar, etc. if you, yourself, are good at it. You are not!
    jhharlan

Thank you for saying what I was hinting.....
    Bob/PKB

Thank you for pointing out WELL/GOOD.

It's scary but that's the way our young people spell in the U.S. now. I went to college in the 80s, when I was in my 30s, and even the college kids' spelling was atrocious. One reason it that in the 70s or 80s, the educational system came up with a theory called '' creative spelling '' . My sister -in- law who was a elem teacher said the idea was ' ' to get them writing''   The feeling was that it was better to let the kids write a little bit everyday ,even if they couldn't spell the words, than to wait till they were in teh 3rd or 4th grade and could spell many words. The problem was, the kids carried it over into their everyday life and didn't see spelling as important. I have a teaching degree and sub taught for 8 or 9 years, and I can tell you that with the older kids, many of the papers had a lot of spelling errors. And even on the state tests ---on the writing part of it.----they allow the students to misspell everything and still get a passing grade on their compositon . And you can forget about grammar and puncuation. Their teachers don't drill them on it anymore, like lthey did us .......those of us who were kids years ago. And the schools don't teach penmanship ( cursive ) anymore. They say it's not neccessary. Now, we're going to have a whole generation of kids who can't read cursive writing .

    itsmee

That method is called D’Nelian. I’ve seen it and I can even write in that creative method. It was, uh, stupid! I don’t believe it lasted long in California.
    mycatsmom

To; Its mee ---that's interesting . They've been doing if for a long time in Mich. I think they still do it in elem. schools. I know they have even the 1st graders write in their journals every morning, even tho they spell everything like they want. And they're never corrected for it. Thanks for putting a name on the theory and validating my entry.

I've been asking that question for some time now. ?????

You are not the first to express concern about the inferior spelling often seen here, nor will you be the last.  The reasons have been set out by almost everybody who is a "regular".
My youngest son always got "A" on his spelling tests.  When he wrote essays or letters, he couldn't spell to save his life.  Bright kid, bright young adult; spelling....not so much.
It's harder to take the questions that are just a couple of words that can be interpreted 87 different ways.
