He actually does a lot more than that, it's more in what you are not seeing that you don't grasp.

If the president dies in office or is impeached, the vice president would take over the presidency and finish out the term so we do not have to hurry up and elect a new president.

I have to be honest... I have no idea what your vice presidents do except not travel on the same plane.
