How do you really "be there" for a good friend whose only child, an adult, had passed away from natural causes, this time last year and he and his wife are hvaing a very difficult time with it during the holidays, especially? Want SO much to help without intruding. How can I?

Maybe you can do a project together to help someone else in the name of this adult child . A day with purpose passes much more quickly than one with no purpose . Turn the sadness into joy with a group project. Lots of people need help this year ,find away to make a difference . Bill

Wow! Much bigger answer than I had expected! Yeah, this time of year is difficult for many families, my 1st experience with such. Thank you so very much for your thoughts and useful suggestions, Bluesman, Bill. Thank you much..........

    Excellent idea!

i think bluesman has a terrific answer!
In addition, I would probably just come right out and say something like, "I can't begin to imagine how difficult the holidays are going to be for you." and then just say that you want to do whatever you can to help them get through them.  Telephone often, just to check in and be a listening ear.  Get him and/or her out for coffee and conversation, some shopping, even getting a bouquet out to the cemetary.
You are a true friend to be concerned and anxious to help them through this really hard time.

For those who are gone we have the responsibility to live large and well . So when we meet again at the bridge there will many stories worth telling .Make this sadness make a difference ,trade one sad memory for a beautiful one . Have a gathering at the fountain in the mall on Christmas eve when people are going nuts shopping ,have some cookies and milk bring his picture . Give a gift to a stranger . You will be blessed beyond your imagination. Rember when you hear the bell and angel has gotten their wings
