'Definately' if they are American Pit Bulls.

I like pitbulls and no they should not be banned. Bad owners and idiots who do not take care of them properly should be banned.

I totally agree. Pit Bulls are sweet animals. It's the people who raise them that are to blame for their viciousness!
    zorro

They should not be banned, ever. Lawyers to make a living.

Beside if they were banned, you'd be bored and have to take up the charge against something else. You have pit bulls and gays covered, what next Zorro? Who are you going to go after next? People are dangerous, why not fight to have them eradicated too?

No they are georges dogs and very loving its the owners of these poor dogs that give them a bad name they are ones who need training I do agree that you should have a licence to have a dog years ago in the UK we had to have a licence to have a dog but not anymore I wish they would bring it back but definatley NO these dogs are Fab

It's not the dog it's the owner.  I have been attacked by Yorkies three times and a Pitty only once.  That dog's name was Cartel so you can imagine what type of person owned it.

Actually I am more afraid of Chows than Pitbulls.... and when I was about 13 I was attacked by a Standard Poodle.

All dogs should be licenced and all owners are responsible.

*(I worked in the pet industry... In case any one was wondering).

wow! fish girl you amaze me all the time. I tend to be afraid of dogs and the thought of being bitten by one. But I am glad to know you worked in that field so I guess you knew how to handle dogs that like to bite.

    You are hilarious, dondarlingjr. :)

Pit bulls and all domestic animals are what the owners make them. I knew some Doberman dogs who liked to be lap dogs. Training is everything!

We have had dogs from fighting rings brought to us at the ASPCA.... They were the sweetest most affectionate dogs. All they wanted was to be petted and praised. Some we were able to rehabilitate.. Some continued to have dog agressstion... But that is what they were taught.

Not one of 87 we got were people agressive. And saddly they had to be put down because some DB psycopath who should have never owned a dog taught it that other animals were its enemy.

Pits are affectionate loyal and trianable. PPL on the other hand are sometimes lacking in compassion.

I like the fact that dogs need license I believe cats should be license too and the leash law is good when in strange surroundings.

Dogs act on instinct and can attack people or another dog for many reasons, training, oder, sound, etc.

Pit bulls are a one person dog and very protective, that can make them more dangerous than others if not trained to love all.

Yikes...looks just like the GS that came after me across the lake while I was swimming. I can still see him snarling and growling at my eye level in the water! I was a young teenager at the time and fortunately his owner saw what was happening and whistled him back. Guess how much I like these dogs?

Sorry Colleen...wrong again...I'm a dog lover...have had many, many dogs...various breeds..and btw...I'm not fixated on anything, an expression often used by you, in your usual attempt to ALWAYS be right...end of discussion because, you will respond to the other person's opinion with "you are fixated", when they don't agree with you.

I've told you Randy Palmer - I will kiss an squeeze her anytime - whatever mood she's in good or bad. She is so sweet with your other girlie dog.
    Headless Man

I'll tell them dopey, It will make their tail wag........lol

I got bit by two beagles as a kid when I was delivering newspapers. I've never been bitten by a pit and they are all around where I live.

I think all dogs should be licensed and insured. License fee deductions for neuter/spayed dogs. Higher license fee for breeder dogs, breed specific dangerous dogs and untrained/undisciplined  dogs. Insurance should be required just like auto drivers for all dogs. The insurance industry can press public responsibility.

This brings revenue to the state, reduces dog attacks, provides compensation for injury. Then after all that if your pitbull rips the hand off the mail lady you may not loose your house paying her medical bills or the state have to pay the bill because the dog was uninsured and the dog owner is on welfare.

They are in my state. Homeowner's insurance covers the dogs. A town dog license is required.

Never mind, you meant for people who do not own a home.
    robertgrist

Everyone with a dog. In California you have to go after the dog owner in court. The English Pit bull is a smaller animal than the American Pit Bull. the English PB tends to clamp down and roll over and can break an arm in play, without breaking the skin. American Pit Bulls bite and back-up. They cannot open their jaw unless they push into the bite, so if a pit bull is hanging onto your hand, you have to go with them to get them to release your hand or cut their head off to save your hand.

I hate to spoil this "love fest" for pit bulls but there are far too many stories of pit bulls attacking small, helpless children.  A baby, in a stroller, was attacked and had half of her face ripped off.  That is only one of many stories, (and yes they are true, with law suits involved).  I know that other kinds of dogs have also attacked people but it seems to me that pitt bulls are particularly vicious and then the owners blame the "attacked" making statements such as, "The child must have done something to provoke my lovely, gentle, kind hearted dog."  Sorry, I don't buy it.

They pick one dog every decade or so and report only on the attacks of that breed. The rotties had their time and the dobermans and the german sheppards... systematic persecution is all it is. Pit bulls are animal aggressive, not human aggressive. My leeroy (dog on the right in my picture) is 1/2 pit bull. He loves everyone.

Fine but you really should get to know the dogs to give them a fair shake. Don't just go on news reports.

I'm sure that some pit bulls are wonderful pets. Had you seen the face of the baby that was torn apart by one, you might have second thoughts. That one baby was NOT the only one.

Oh please. Give it a rest. Have you seen babies mangled in car wrecks because daddy was a crappy driver? You people feed way too much into media drama.

"You people"? Are you referring to those of us who dare disagree with you? tsk tsk tsk
    Colleen

    Moderator
No I am referring to you people who dare to try an eradicate an entire breed due to your own ignorance and made up fears. See what Pythonlover posted. It's not only me you are disagreeing with. Others here have defended the pit. Tsk, tsk, tsk, for not noticing that and fixating on only that I say.

I wouldn't let any dog around a baby, my dogs love babies but not allowed around them without supervision or a leash.

Same here Randy. You never know when a dog will get jealous and then act "totally out of character". I've had a couple of snappy dogs that were always very gentle around me, but not always quite the same with others.

dangerous owners make dangerous dogs.Though having said that,i beleive some breeds are more prone to agression than others. My German Shepherd is typical of his breed, soft as a brush with family ,very protective when were out.Coincidentally,3 burgularies locally in the past couple of weeks.Touch wood,so far weve been ok...

    From Pythonlovers comment:
"Hyped-up media coverage of Pitbull attacks, often with factually inaccurate reporting, adds to the breed's bad reputation and results in public paranoia. But aren't Pitbulls vicious people haters? No more vicious than beagles and golden retrievers! In a study of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Society, Pitbulls achieved a passing rate of 83.9%. Beagles scored 78.2% and golden retrievers, 83.2%. If you want to see how other breeds scored, go to the Testing Society's website, ATTS.org."

Pitbulls are not naturally aggressive towards people.

I don't think it's the dogs but the owners. To have a tough viscious dog means you are a tough viscious person seems to be the mentallity of some of these guys that own them.

I do believe the savage ones have been mistreated to make them savage.Don't license the dogs, locense the owners.

    zorro

tell that to the family that lost their baby girl from the family pitbull that killed her in the baby crib. Most pit bull owners dont abuse or mistreat their animals. They just wont believe it will ever happen. Some time they will snap and do as they are bred to do. An agressive fighting animal that will kill.
    Colleen

    Moderator
That's only part of the story, yet again Zero, where's the rest of it?

What about the families who lost their babies to savage people or a drunk parent. People are more harmful than these dogs are. Any dog can go viscous, not just pits but all you people want to do if fixate on the pits. When you manage to eradicate the pit, you'll go after another breed. You people aren't happy unless you are finding fault with man or beast.

Colleen once again..."you people" and "fixated".

Many myths and misconceptions surround the American Pitbull Terrier, probably more so than any other dog breed. Unfortunately, the Pitbull's future has been irreparably harmed by people who choose to train this naturally affectionate, people-pleasing dog to fight. Hyped-up media coverage of Pitbull attacks, often with factually inaccurate reporting, adds to the breed's bad reputation and results in public paranoia. If you want to see how other breeds scored, go to the Testing Society's website, ATTS.org.

In the ATT test, a dog is put through a series of confrontational situations, and any sign of panic or aggression leads to failure of the test. The high scoring of Pitbulls in this study disproves the widely held believe that this breed is inherently mean and aggressive to people.

    zorro

the majority of owners dont treat their animals bad. Why would they want to. Still they are the highest breed that kills people. They were bred to fight.

When an American  pit bull  maims or kills a close friend or relative. you may have a change of heart.

    Colleen

No, I won't. I will still blame the owner.

I love animals, any breed, they like children, depends how they are trained. Bad people, bad animals. Good Children, good parents, no difference really.

    zorro

pit bulls dont need to be trained , beaten up, or other type of mistreatment to attack. They were bred to be agressive. The LUCKY owners never will have a problem. Notice i put lucky in caps.

Pit bulls are the most lovable and gentle pets. They are not viscious and will not hurt anybody unless an owner treats them badly. People give them a bad reputation because the press prints and shows all the pit bull attacks just to give them a bad name and sell newspapers. They were not bred to fight or kill, and an owner should never have to pay for insurance to own one. There is just no truth that these are bad animals. They are just like any other dog.

Thanks for continuing to comment here so we can know not to take anything you say as you being truthful. I'll trust a pit bull over someone like you any day. You made a lair out of yourself by pretending to defend them. What did you expect to accomplish with this?

Yes so true Zorro - give a dog a bad name and who knows what humans will do to re-inforce that.

People with agendas to destroy are dangerous.

    Looking for facts?       http://www.dog-bite-law-center.com/pgs/stats.html
Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States seeks medical attention for a dog bite.??There are approximately 800,000 bites per year in the United States that require medical treatment. ?Most of the victims are children, and most of them are bitten on the face.??Almost $165 million is spent treating dog bites and 70% of dog bites occur on the owner's property.
Dog bites result in approximately 44,000 facial injuries each year. This represents between 0.5% and 1.5% of all hospital emergency room visits. Male patients slightly outnumber females. Unfortunately children comprise 60% of the dog bite victims. Severe injuries occur almost exclusively in children less than 10 years of age. The face is the most frequent target (77% of all injures). Mail carriers are an exception where 97% involve the lower extremities. We see an unusual number of dreadful injuries each spring. Severely injured patients stay an average of 4.2 days in the hospital. Dog bites cause an average of 18 deaths a year.

THANK YOU FOR THIS MOST RELEVANT INFORMATION!

Isent it a pity we cant get (well I never checked) link for bad and dangerous people, guess internet would be full of such links.!

My last response about this subject is the typical response representing a naive irrational pitbull owner. They dont realize the potential legal problems owning a pitbull. Too many children have been attacked and hurt by this breed of animal. The only people that benefit from this kind of situation are lawyers. They sue the owners for everything they own and will own in their future. Right on ducka.

Are you still droning on about this? Fixate much? Let it go. your agenda will never be met. Ever.

Thanks Zorro. Pit bull OWNERS are a special breed themselves. The dogs grab on and chew and so do the owners. Angry owners = angry dogs.
    Colleen

    Moderator
Bull crap. My neighbor who owns 3 is not an angry chew on type person, nor is my brother who owns two. You people will make up anything to prove your weak points. Misinformation causes rampant fear. Keep doing your dirty work with your wild accusations. Maybe all pit bull owners should be destroyed too? Would that make you feel safer? Ugh.

    Colleen, once again, "fixate".

But this is a free nation. if people want to take chances with such an animal, they have the right to. Just like i have the right to sue you for everything you own and portion in your future if your pit bull attacks me and damages me. In a court pitbulls never win. Its not worth it. Dont say it wont happen to you.

    Colleen

    Moderator
You'd be the type to sue them if they let their dog lap you. I can hear you now, "Ewww, ewww, pit bull germs!"

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2009/dec/27/pit-bulls-responsible-disproportionate-number-atta/

Here is a good summary. If the army air force , and marines ban them on bases , well you can realize the potential. The comparison between auto manufacturing and pit bulls is another thought. Very good article. Only the more conscious people do not own these kind of animals.

    Colleen

    Moderator
U.S. Marine Corps recently issued an order banning pit bulls, Rottweilers and wolf-hybrid breeds and mixes on its bases.
They sound like wimps to me. Big brave marines afraid of dogs? Now the enemy knows, just get all those dogs and the Marines won't advance on them.

No an animals behavior is all relative to how the owner raises that animal just like kids, people.  Now there are some people that should be banned from society for their behavior.
