There's probably a lot of different ways to look at it. I see a lot of stereotyping going on, based upon the assumption that the parents are the ones financially helping their children. Families help each other for various reasons all the time. Have you ever heard of the term "Mother-in-law" apartment?"
There's more perspectives and circumstances out there than what a movie or one's assumption readily conjures up.

If Mom and Dad will welcome them home after having gone into debt, paying for college, why not? That way, a graduate can have everything they want, RIGHT NOW...free food, laundry, cable, internet, car, gas and insurance included, sleep in every morning, party every night and no responsibilities. Did those parents ever tell their child...NO? Funny how some kids can ALWAYS find a job and a little apartment somewhere. Those are the ones that make me proud.

Where I live it is very common for entire families (three generations) to live under one roof. It is part of their culture.
It's also very common for children to move back home after they have finished school because the student debt that has to be repaid. Real estate is also extremely expensive and just renting a basement suite costs a small fortune let alone a 400 square foot apartment.
The way things are going ... my son will never leave home.
