I would have died in childbirth at age 20. I was born at the right time and so was my son. He wouldn't have made it either. (My guess)

My late  mother was born in 1911. So, last June, I quietly celebrated what would be her 100th birthday. Even my bro called me to acknowlege her heavenly birthday .   She had whooping cough when she was little. She almost died of it ,b/c back then, there were NO antibiotics. The most common cause of death was infection ----b/c it would go into your system ( sepsis ) and kill  you.  I guess her birthdate makes me look old, but she was 37 when I was born and my father was 42. It was a first marriage for both of them; And they were happy. She had said her family had an outdoor toilet and they didn't have a car. Her family lived on a farm till my mother, who was the baby , was  4. And then the farm failed. So they moved into town b/c her father wanted the kids to go to H.S. He got a job in a factory. All 4 kids grad from  H.S.  Her parents thought they were done having kids after 3, b/c the parents got married over 30. Then 6 yrs later, along came little Mildred. She was everybody's favorite, according to her sisters.   Here's another trivia fact that bears out that the average life expectancy was about 46. My father was born in 1906. When he was 6mos old, his father died at 46 of Brights Disease ( Kidney disease )  My mother's only brother got ''Sleeping Sickness ''  i.e.          enchepalitis from the 1918 flu. It also gave him Parkinsonian like symtoms So he died of that at only 31. His parents had to take care of him from the time he was 18 till he died at 31   :-(

My mom used to say that onetime an old doctor told her that back then, people almost didn't expect their babies to live to be 12. It they made that, then their outlook to live was better.

    bulletman

this is most likely why there were large families because of the infantile death rate,
    Spaceghost

Mycatsmom, thank you SO much for the comments, we have some things in common. My grandmother was born Aug.7th 1911, she died Jan 16th 2000 at the age of 88. My grandfather was born March 14th 1906. He died Nov. 18th 1996 at 90 years old.
    mycatsmom

Thanks for your comments, everyone. .....good insight. Yes, maybe they did have a lot of babies b/c of the infant mortality rate. Both my mother's mother and my mother's father came from a family of 11 or 12 kids. It was thought that they would always have farm hands back then. It was an agregarian society

Thank you ALL for the valuable information, greatly appreciated.

    at the local corner drugstores.

Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion,
gives buoyancy to the mind, Regulates the stomach and bowels,
and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!"
    ( Shocking? )

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

    Spaceghost

Fuel for this car was a 1911 Ford Model T.
    mycatsmom

Thank you, Space Ghost for giving us that interesting information. Maybe the '' good ole days'' weren't that good, after all.The worst thing about back then, is that alot of babies and children died before they were 10.
    mycatsmom

If they had a real bath tub, they took a bath once a week, if they lived in the city and had running water. The had to heat the water on the stove. Some of them took a bath once a year. Everybody in the family used the same tub of bath water.

and Meridian, ridden by G. Archibald, won the 1911 Kentucky Derby.

    Spaceghost

Thank you SO much for the information, greatly appreciated. My God 2 cents for a first- class postage stamp !!!!
    Bob/PKB

It is so easy to get the information and pass it along! I think, how much more difficult it had to have been to get mail delivered across country, even to a nearby state, and yet, it was done at just two cents each. Has inflation increased over the years that much??

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !
The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year ..
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
    A dentist $2,500 per year,
a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year,
and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at home .
Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month,
and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

    Bob/PKB

.....washed their hair ONCE A MONTH? OMG, I can feel the bugs crawling on my neck just thinking about it. Were those REALLY the "good old days"?
    Spaceghost

That was rough wasn't it? Washing hair just once a month whew !!!
    mycatsmom

my mom said when she was growing up, they just used a bar of soap to wash their hair. Then they wrapped a towel around their head adn went to bed. '' Bed head '', I guess.
Anyway, even up to more recent years, my later mother would use Vinegar for a rinse after shampooing her hair. Does anyone else remember their grandmother or somebody using vinegar for that ?
    Spaceghost

Yes MCM, I remember my grandmother saying the same thing about washing her hair in vinegar, and they used vinegar for lots of things.

My Mother was born in June of 1911, two years later she rode in the back of a covered wagon with her four year old sister from Madison county Iowa to Platte South Dakota. The driver was my Grandma who was 23 at the time. They were going to jion my grandpa who had come ahead to prove up the land and build the house for them. The trip took two weeks. Grandma said it would have been quicker but the milk cow didn't walk very fast or far.

    Spaceghost

Wow, that is something else, the milk cow may not have been fast transportation but one thing, they didn't go thirsty. Thank you very much sadiesays for your comment, I enjoyed that.
