    so terrible
    Darci13

I had not heard about it but I think it is beyond cruelty and should be punished severely. I think it is beyond horrendous.

You would feel a little different if you had kids and pets in the area, the monkey that was not found was probably eaten by one of the tigers, they where hungry and scared and close to I-70.
The Ohio laws about keeping of wild animals will change now I'm sure, sad but these animals may have not died in vain.

This man who had these animals on the farm had been arrested for animal cruelty before.I am terrible distraught that these animals were not taken from him and put in a safe place. I cant imagine that he would open up all these cages and let these animals escape. It does not ring true to me. I am very suspicious of that event and his death. I know they had to kill most of these animals, because they did not have a stuntguns. These animals belonged in the wild, where they are free. There needs to be a law against importing exotic and wild animals to any country.Man is the cruelest inhabitant of this earth. I trust Animals more than people. I am in mourning for these beautiful creatures.

I'm sure the law here in Ohio will change now, sad it takes something like this to get it done.

Ann such a good answer - I must say I am with you trust Animals more than people. I would give you TU but it is just blank so is the thank author.

Shame and they just buried the bodies. At least the hides should have been used for some good . Could have put the money back into some animal welfare program. What ever damage the owner hoped to deliver to his neighbours I hope some how he knows his death and actions were a total waste. ZERO !!!! Big day for the cops they will tell stories about this day for ever. What a waste of life ,those animals did nothing except be what they were "animals ". All in all its a shameful day and a very sad event. I am glad this was not my decision to make .

That is beyond sad on so many levels.  How did that man obtain so many wild animals?  We have to apply for licences here and it's not an easy thing to do.

    Oh my goodness.

I can't believe that the Ohio authorities would allow someone to keep 56 potentially dangerous animals on a farm.

These animals require a lot of specialized attention from someone who really knows what they are doing.

Having 49 of them killed is tragic but it's preferable to having any of them at large. What if a lion spotted one of your kids & designated him/her as dinner?

This is a situation that should never have arisen.Nobody should be allowed to keep exotic animals anywhere without a special licence.

    Headless Man

Your right, laws will change now I'm sure. To bad it takes something like this to get it done.

Hi Randy I had a look at the link you posted I am so shocked that i am crying as I write this and God bless these poor Animals this man should NEVER had these Animals I thought the law in the USA was quite strict in haveing wild Anilmals in The UK its on the verge of being ridiculess if you are cat breader it comes under the Zoo or if you are a santury of birds it comes under ZOO mad any way as Ann pointed out this man had been reported crurilty towards Animals so he did not desearve these poor creatures .....these animals belong in thier own habitate not in Zoos of any thing else ...I do think it could have been handled alot better even in the dark with Tranquilizers ect its has been a poor do and I hope there will be a investigation on what really happed! do you think the orthirties had some thing to do with this =? xx

    Headless Man

There was no tranquilizer guns available until the Columbus Zoo manager got there at 5:00 in the morning, they did try to tranquilize one and it ran toward the man (who had to get close to get a good shot) and had to be put down, however they did capture some 3-4 and took them to the zoo to try and find a place for them.
Tranquilizer guns work good if they are in a cage or in the wild but not when there in a populated area.
    melandrupert

thanks Randy Palmer for that info yes I can understand that about the tranquilizer guns are better used in small and enclosed spaces I am glad that a least a few got saved xxxx

It makes me ragingly angry. They could have  shot them with a tranquilizer gun, and shipped them off to sanctuaries in different states. Yes, I know they shot some of them in the daytime with a tranq gun. The sheriffs said they couldn't shoot them at night with a tranq gun, b/c '' they couldn't see them '' ......but  they shot them at night with a bullet.  It's always the kids and the  animals that have to suffer when they get stuck in the middle of peoples problems.  Animals are not happy when they're kept and not happy when let go in  dangerous territory where they can't take care of themselves. And don't have the food supply that's in their native habitat.  The sheriffs and their deputys had a field day killing all the wild game. And it was sick the way they lined up the carcusses for picture taking , as it they were so proud of their take. They treated it like an African Safari.

    itsmee

After seeing those photographs, people will never let this happen again. NEVER.
    bulletman

Don't be silly, It's more fun to shoot them!

I Still think they could have saved some animals instead of the usual gung ho approach of killimg any thing that moves. -- Regardless i what you say about the protection of citizens a different approach could have been done instead of slaughtering. i am a bit sh#*# off, sorry.

    Headless Man

They had no choice, they were close to schools and in a populated area, they did not know if the animals were trained or wild, darkness was upon them. Tough choice for the sheriff but I hope he doesn't have to pay for his decision.

I believe it was a sad but necessary thing to do.

Very very sad, i wont say any more because everyone here has said exactly what i want to say - Its real nice to see so many animal lovers.

The situation could have better handled, a lot better. They had time to get tranq guns and used to put the.drugged animals back into their cages and lock the doors. Somebody should have gone for them... They could have been saved....w/o so much trouble....Taken and cared for ALIVE. They had professional volunteers ready in the wings to move in and save the animals....But short lived panic won out and beautiful animals, rare animals are dead because of poor planning. At least tan the furs and sell for a benefit to aid the now defunct zoo...Do something right.....

    Headless Man

No they didn't, it was almost dark when the sherif got there, they contacted the Columbus Zoo and Jack Hanna was there at 5am but could not save only 3 and said what was done had to be done and I believe he knows. He had tears in his eyes.
    itsmee

Yes, I saw the tears in Jack Hanna's eyes. I saw them through the tears in my own eyes. It was handled right ...

    pioneer2

When you have wild animals running free in populated areas ..... you can't be waiting for tranquilizer guns. Can you imagine the outrage if someone would have been attacked by a tiger ????

I'm just glad the worthless bastard who left them loose is DEAD !!!!!!!!!!

As a member of PETA (people eating tasty animals) i am totally outraged..seriously though this a tragedy , someone must be held accountable..

    melandrupert

Daren I am A member of PETA as well I have posted a question with regard to saving sheep from Aussie have a look there is also a link about this outrages thing that is happening have a look xxx
    daren1

yes indeed i will , you know i love animals as well..

We don't keep exotic animals here except in environmentally friendly zoo's(if there is such a thing) I can't stand anything being killed or hurt, I carry a towel in my car to pick up injured animals off the road and get them help, nearly got run over a few weeks ago by the school bus saving a swamp pheasant, I was thrilled when I learned it had survived, Im always moving turtles and echidnas etc. off the road to a safer place. I hate spiders, but I don't even kill them, makes me very sad to read about this

So sad. Unbelievable. So terrible that the laws didn't prohibit that kind of animal care.

I had friends who lived about three miles up from a zoo. When the lion (or lions) gave that mighty roar, it chilled you. Has everybody heard a lion's roar?

Darkness Was Upon Them sounds like the title of a Stephen King horror story.

    Headless Man

Yes, I've heard a Lion's roar, it will get your attention.

Glad it was not my neighborhood.

I know nothing of this tragedy - too unbearable to think about, so distressing.I will not begin to comment about how I feel about animal cruelty.

I was in Sri Lanka once and saw a puppy on a market stall by the sea with his paw clean cut off.

    itsmee

Oh! And all your life you’ll remember. And the hurter does not give it a thought. Sorry, Dopey.
    Poppy3

So true itsmee - spoiled my holiday among other animal experiences.

it may have been avoid if there were sedative guns ,,,but no time i guess ,,,look this is all bull ,,,no one should have these animal and it needs to be totally outlaw,,,heck they arrest for having a dog on a chain ,,,,no no no exotic animals ,,ever ,,,,,maybe an exotic dancer or two ,,come on this is stupid to allow this

Thanks for information, which I could not read. as it is about animals.

    itsmee

Dollybird: Why could you not read the information? I ask because there is one certain animal that I have a phobia about. I cannot read a story about it nor can I see it on TV or on the internet. I have asked a psychiatrist about this problem and all he said was “Everybody is afraid of something.” I don’t think that’s true. I think my fear is really abnormal. When I see it I get sick.
    Dollybird

itsmee, Any thing that is cruel, and killing of animals, makes me so stressed, and effects me for long time.

It was not handled right! Randy and Itsmee you 2 are the reason why things like this happen! They could of used tranquilizers!  They did not have to kill them! I am embarrassed of our society, I am embarrassed of Ohio, I am embarrassed of you 2, Killing is not the answer, just the easiest.

    Headless Man

Sorry, but you where not there, the leader of the Columbus Zoo, Jack Hanna was there as soon as possible and they did try to tranquilize one and it ran toward the man and had to be put down.
Would you prefer a child or someone pet would be hurt or killed?
The monkey that was loose was eaten so we know they where hungry.
    Headless Man

I don't understand why U would be embarrassed of me, I only report the story............?
    itsmee

Randy, Thank you for answering for both of us. I would have said the same thing, of course.
    Suzanne

This is the first time I've seen this question.  Doo is still discusted by this slaughter! And saddened.  It could have been handled in a much better way had the police not panicked.

    Headless Man

    See my answer for bughugger.......

My TU is not working very well. I’m frustrated.

    Headless Man

I've had the same problem, report to administration, I did.
