Effeminate, having feminine characteristics in appearances and manner, girlish is the usual fair for cross dressers, gay men occasionally, transvestites and men who attempt  to emulate or act like a girl for humor or effect. As a male child I found the company of women much more desirable than that of men. As an growing boy my enjoyment of the company and think of women continued to interest me more than the rude and crude behavior of men. I found sports disappointingly shallow. But I found my place among men in the sciences and worked on many technical projects. I study in the humanities. I’m not gay, I have friends who are gay, men, women and straight couples and singles also. I am what I am and the nomenclature doesn’t mean much in the long run.          

If a man is effeminate, it means that he has qualities that are usually associated with women or girls.

I think a man who has regular pedicures borders on being effeminate. (Unless he has Diabetes)

I think a man who wears a veiled hat  and hot pink nail polish is effeminate.

It's not a word that a man usually wants to hear about himself.
