It refers to the finish on the furniture. I do this with certain projects (wood) I apply paint and sand it off in areas...bash the wooden in this case mirror frames (and end tables) with a hammer and other items...paint another colour sand...apply wax to certain areas...paint with another colour, sand and keep on layering until the mirror frame looks the way I want it to look and then apply at least 2 layers of varnish.

Awesome! I bet it's a home with character.
My furniture is so distressed that on occasion I will break up a wooden chair and load it into my stove. I have a yard sale occasionally to sell my “antique” distressed furniture and buy better at other peoples sales.
