Pride is a double-edged sword. When people are pride-ful, we say they are proud.
Cory was proud of the "A" he got on his chemistry final. He was pleased with doing a good job and happy for himself. He called family and friends to tell them about it. Pride in a job well-done.
Denise lost 20 pounds in six weeks and was proud of herself. She carries herself a little taller, has a bigger smile, and knows she looks good. She is proud of her hard work and how much nicer she looks a little slimmer.
Then there is the "deadly sin" type of pride. Potiphar's wife is a good example. She wanted Joseph as a lover and he rejected her. She tore at his clothes when he ran from her room, and she ripped his robe from him. Being the wife of an important soldier and a woman who was accustomed to people doing what she said, her pride would not let her admit that she had been rejected. She accused Joseph of trying to rape her and he was imprisoned. BAD PRIDE.
So, pride can be a feeling of self-satisfaction for accomplishing something. Pride can also be an exaggerated opinion of one's worth, looks, abilities. Some people are also too "proud" to accept a helping hand. My mom is like that. She should use a cane when she walks to just give a little support, but she doesn't want to look like she can't "do it herself". Because of that misplaced pride, she has had some falls and injuries to go with them.
