The phrase "jump the shark" originates from an episode of the television show "Happy Days", in which one of the characters water-skies and jumps over a shark that's confined in a water-tank. That act of jumping over a shark symbolized for some the beginning of a creative decline of the show. In 1997, the radio personality Jon Hein published a list of what he defined as moments where 200 television programs "jumped the sharks", which was a phrase Hein and his friends came up with after seeing that Happy Days episode. Ever since, that phrase coined by Hein, grew more and more popular.
