Hi jhharlan I wanted to know are we talking wet food or dry food! or both as fish has mentioned that in cats food there is more salt ( so they will drink water) its definatley NOT in wet food and the dry food I buy for my cats also have traces of salt like everything we have but no more I know that Cats do have kidney problems and that is why the dry food was invented but guess what now the vets are saying if you have cat who is old put them on wet food as this does contain more water anyway let me cheers lol

My vet told me not to feed my dogs any cat food because their digestive systems do not work the same;dogs and cats require different amounts of protien etc..  I think over an extended period of time signs and symptoms of damage to the dogs digestive system will become evident due to so many years of improper nutrition. Why would you want to give your pets anything but the best for them!

My cat and dog eat each other's food.  They're still alive half an hour ago.

IT IS SAID CAT FOOD HAS TOO MUCH PROTIEN FOR A DOG. HOWEVER MANY PEOPLE WITH TINY DOGS DO FEED THEM CAT FOOD. i THINK IT SPELLS GOOD TO A DOG.

I've heard that it taste sweet to a dog...
    carmaxable

    at least HE can SMELL

If that was all he was eating, he wouldn't be getting the proper nutrition, but if he eats it in addition to his doggie food, it prob won't hurt him. It's better than him eating leather shoes and furniture and smelly socks.

Thank you. All he gets is Worthless' left overs but dumped on his dry food, he gobbles every bite up.

Depends on protein in food, age of dog. Dont worry about it , better worry what dog is eating outside. The cat food is least of your worries.

Cat food is too high in protein and salt for a dog.  The extra salt in cat food is to promote cats to drink water as they are prone to kidney disease.

Cats are naturally carniverous and dogs are not.

hi fish girl where have you got this salt bit from my cats have been eating dry and wet food with just traces of salt the vets now recomend that your cat eat wet food as it contains more water Re: for kindneys I have never heard of Manufactures caring what our cats eat by added more salt to thier diet so they drink more if this the case and you have prove of the sauce Re:info let me have at once and watch this space thanks

I worked in the pet industry for 30 years and was married to a sales rep for a pet food manufacturing company. I have also studied nutrition as that was one of my specialties...building diets for dogs with issues and allergies.
Cats have to drink a lot of water...that is the truth. The salt promotes the drinking of water.
    FISH-O

PS melandrupert...If you are feeding your cat a high quality diet then don't worry about salt et al.
My cat walked through the front door and stayed (That was 4 years ago). She doesn't eat wet food but she is on a very high quality kibble and is very healthy (which is more than I can say from the day she said, "Meow...I am moving in'.
There are a lot of pet food manufacturers that care about your pet's nutrition because not everyone buys their pet food at the grocery store.

cats food is not good for dogs it has far too much protein in the food and make thier digestive system go heywire

My cat LOUIE only ate dry dog food. Would not eat any cat food at all. Louie died at 24 people years. Their systems can't be that much different.

Wow 25 years. My cat is 12 but she already has arthitis and can only walk on three legs. I don't think she'll make it 25 years.

I was blessed with this cat. Never was sick. Never messed the house. Wouldn't chase birds or chipmunks. Followed me around like a puppy. Truly a mellow animal. I miss my buddy.

To Ed ---But they are ----b/c cats are strictly carnivorous. And dogs are omnivorous

My dog loves eating cats...oops just a wee joke

So does my dog. We had a cat come onto the property a few nights ago and my dog mangled it. The only cat he will not bother is the family cat.

    poor cat. Cats beware
    mycatsmom

To bumpkin, You had to tell us that, didn't you!! Well, it made me sick, b/c I have 3 darling cats who are the love of my life.!!
    bulletman

I don't think thats funny at all.

Sorry, I didn't mean to repost this question...

Thanks for understanding, Ann (yours is the name of my favorite Aunt and is my original middle name).

If your dog is healthy and without any health issues... I would not worry about it, as long as he is eating his food. Left overs sounds like it is minimal... Yes if he was only eating Cat food with high protien and fat I would be concerned. You are a good furrbaby mama!

    My husband likes it...

I know a man who loves to eat dry dog food. He grabs him a handful as he passes by the sack and eats it like it is trail mix or popcorn.

i think whats being said is cat food is mostly fish, the wet kind is any way. fish will mess up a dog because they  get caught in his throat and in the soft tissue around his mouth. he swells up and needs a vet. dry cat food probably wont hurt him. no bones about it

To bulletman and mycatsmom: I never so much even hinted, that my dog mangling the cat that wondered onto our property was funny. I love animals, I have two dogs and a cat myself. *~*CB.

Think you need to re-read, your reply to , friendsindeed, You did state that your dog, mangled the cat!!!!!!!!!!!country bum.

He did say the dog mangled the cat, but he did not say it was funny. I believe that was country bumpk point.

Dollybird: Yes I did say the dog mangled the cat because this is exactly what he did and this is the best word to describe what I witnessed. My dog was slinging it around by the neck, punctured some holes in it and nearly ripped of it's whole leg. Now, I would definitley say that MANGLED was a good word of choice for what happened. Again, I NEVER said it was funny or did I put LOL anywhere in my answer. Some of you people need to stop trying to read things into peoples statements that are NOT there.

Yvonne57: This was my point exactly. Thank you for realizing this. I love dogs and cats. I was volunteer for the humane society once and I have rescued many dogs just on my own time, including a small dog I just placed in a loving home with a nurse in San Antonio just 3 weeks ago. PS. the bumpkin is female.*~*

My son's American Bulldog has been eating my cat's food and it has just created B.M.s that are even more difficult to clean up than from the expensive dog food he eats.

......anybody want an American Bulldog (beautiful, lovable, well-trained) with a propensity for diar...well, you know where that's going.
