From wickedpedia >>>> At the end of the American Civil War in the 1860s, a migration of Confederates to Brazil began, with the total number of immigrants estimated in the thousands. They settled primarily in Southern and Southeastern Brazil: in Americana, Campinas, São Paulo, Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Juquiá, New Texas, Xiririca, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Doce. But in Santarém, Pará – in the north on the Amazon River – and in the states of Bahia and Pernambuco received a significant number of American immigrants.[2]

History of Soccer in Brazil - Getting off the Ground

Brazil's soccer history begins in the late 19th century, when the sport was picked up from Englishmen who were there at the time.

In 1888 the first Brazilian soccer club was formed in the city of Sao Paulo, though at this point the club was still pretty much made up of Englishmen.

The sport struggled to get any where in Brazil at these early stages. The national team (mainly comprised from just a couple of the major soccer clubs) finally played its first game in 1914.

Still most would say that the history of soccer in Brazil really starts in 1930, with their first appearance in the World Cup.

History of Soccer in Brazil - Becoming Great

Though Brazil was eliminated in the first stages of their first World Cup, it brought the sport to the attention of the public.

Once released, soccer spread like wild fire, and quickly became, by far, the most popular sport in the nation.

Brazil's talent at this new sport increased very quickly, and they began to do better in matches.

However, perhaps the greatest event in the history of soccer in Brazil, was the appearance of a soccer player named Pele.

Pele lead the Brazilian national team to two huge World Cup wins in a row in 1958 and 1962, and lead the team to another win in 1970!

Sadly, after he and some of the others of his team retired from the World Cup in 1970, Brazil struggled to keep up the pace.

They did well in some of the World Cups and were even the favored team in 1982. Their team was studded with superstars, but failed to finish at the top of the tournament.

History of Soccer in Brazil - Recent History

Finally Brazil pulled together and found itself at the top of the World Cup once again in 1994.

This brought hope again to the national team, and although they did not win the next World Cup, they were the runners up.

Then, led by their legendary "Three R's": Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho, they became world champions again by defeating Germany 2-0 in the 2002 World Cup final.

History of Soccer in Brazil - Closing

Though Brazil did not win either the 2006 or 2010 World Cups, they are still considered one of the top soccer nations in the world.

When anyone thinks of Brazil it is hard not to think of soccer. The sport has now become a large part of their culture.http://www.history-of-soccer.org/history-of-soccer-in-brazil.html
