I think our Justice system is so good that if a friend commits a crime…I turn them in as soon as I know it. I have not always followed that. Pot is not a crime and it never was in my book. Theft, rape, shooting song birds with pellet guns deserve legal wrath and fines. If my friend did a fraud I would have the police know it. Jail is a very good thing. It teaches adults who choose to behave like greedy children that being “grounded” can happen as an adult also.

I have no envy for those with wealth as it is a responsibility that I am not asked to share. To invest trustingly into the hands of a thief is a disappointment but were that person trusted even more your financial loss would be all the greater. When I have had this experience I looked for the opportunity in that and recognized the now obvious fact that trust must start small and grow gradually step by step. You may be able to leap a mountain in a single bound, bit if those you seek to benefit receive a monumental sum to them (a pittance to you) they may consider you a fool deserving to be robbed. It is necessary to deal with other cultures at their level responsibly. Coffee in Africa is ridiculously cheap by American standards and is highly valued here. The way many American buyers purchase coffee there is by providing them with useful tools and equipment, fuel and household goods in trade. The money gulf is too great to deal with otherwise. To help them is to research what they need and understand their culture.
A very stupid gesture is to be done on their part. I am very good at making peoples lives absolutely miserable when they commit fraud or other abuse to someone. I have ruined a telephone scam artist from rochester ny , for trying to scam money from us after the death of father in law. A commando raid is due. I wish i could help, but cant. Extortion is a clear and viable answer. Then turn them in.
