      if you have a disagreement with someone and you or they decide to take it to court and let a judge or jury decide, many times you can talk with the person and/or company you have the dispute with and try to settle the disagreement face to face.  The courts allow this to save time and and tax payer money.  Settlements can range from $50.00 to millions of dollars.  People may get less money in a settlement than if they took the whole process through court.  Often times both parties are content with settlement.
