Cookies are used to communicate data between your computer and a website. Data such as your contact details / log in info when you've entered them into say Gmail and selected the 'remember me' option to stay logged on. Cookies basically keep authentication data, shopping cart updates, etc. that you want kept when you browse away from your site / window.
