    Hello corona;

    That mark is the signature or 'Chop'.

    As a potter who studied under a Master Japanese Potter, the chop is developed to signify one's work and one's work only.  It is significant of who one is in relation to one's name or one's name with connection to family.

    Learn to write in Japanese.

    In ceramics study, students are encouraged to create their own 'Chop'.

    When painting, it can signify the poetry of the painting, name of the painting or significance of the painting, also with one's Chop or Family Chop applied.
