        I thought it was some herb called "Abi".   Hence, it "Was Abi", and subsequently Wasabi.  Not.

          I believe its a type of horseraddish, the wasabi (root) is grown mainly in Japan, very expensive.  Most sushi bars use regular horsraddish that is colored the familiar wasabi green.  This is what i remember of it.
