Use a favorable environment that fosters learning.  This is usually not the living room, as most families have this as the hub of activity.  Your own bedroom, at a desk preferably, as on the bed is dangerous to temptation to falling asleep!   Such would include NO ELECTRONICS!  This includes television, cell phone, email, etc.  Use the computer, if you are writing or doing research, but during study, do not play games or check facebook, etc.  Also, insure that you are awake, do the studying first, then do other things when you are finished, this way you will be fresher for the book work...  Usually having friends over is not a good idea, unless they are in the same classes, and then it may be helpful to study together.
