    can you pick a random last name for your son?

    I live in California.  When my son was born in 1988, we wanted to give him my maiden name for his surname.  My mother didn't think we could do that.  We were told at the hospital, by the person who recorded the names, that we could give our son any name we wanted including, but not limited to, Cleopatra, King Tut, and Sir Isaac Newton. 


    Just remember that your child is going to carry the name throughout life.
