I agree with Romos... off white with silver over tones.  Lovely actually.

He was considered grey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marengo_(horse)

If the painting is closely accurate, you will notice that the horse has black pigmentation about the muzzle, eyes, and at the genital area, with this it is indeed a Grey horse, very few are white.

He looks like what we call a flea bitten grey.Or if you don't like that term you could say a salt & pepper grey.
