In many countries, the class system determines the pecking order of society. India is a great example. There are so many classes there: based on family background, color, education, and most importantly, money.
In the western society, we have something similar to it. However, it's not as obvious. Look at the prison system. If you're Bernie Madoff, you probably live like you would at a country club. If you are black guy and incarcerated, you're looking at some mean environment.
In America, the very rich get all the preferential treatment. Most Americans just pretend that it doesn't exist. Does it weaken the democratic system? Apparently not.
