Group settlement occurs when the plaintiff (one who sues) is comprised of a group of people, or class action suit. When they settle, they settle for all the people belonging to this class action group.
For example, a class action law suit was initiated against Worldcom. Hundreds of thousands of stock holders aka plaintiff sued Worldcom as one collective unit. One of the possible outcomes would be a group settlement with the defendant, Worldcom.
