    Oblige:

    1. Make (someone) legally or morally bound to an action or course of action: "doctors are obliged by law to keep patients alive while there is a chance of recovery".

    2. Do as (someone) asks or desires in order to help or please them.

    Obligate:

To bind, compel, or constrain by a social, legal, or moral tie.

What would you say is the one thing that differenciates the two words?

I believe that obligate is more of a demand or a requirement, where oblige is more consideration taken.

I am obligated to take care of my mother while she is ill.

I am obliged to treat that person fairly even though she doesn't like me. (As in #2 not #1 of the definition.)
