I think a lot of it is self inflicted...drug abuse can lead to a lot of it.

    right. And severe alcohol abuse

Mental illness.  Interesting that we see behavior as acceptable or unacceptable. The person with the “problem” may see their behavior as rational and acceptable to them. The person seeing the odd behavior and recognizing that they would not behave in that way calls the odd behavior “crazy” and thus begins a rumor war against behaving like that. Others join in the “crazy” chant because the don’t want to be the outsider on the issue. Some seek to question the evidence and by this become an informed opponent or advocate to elevate their position amid the gathering crowd. A debate ensues and proposals and treatments follow. But one question remains unasked. Is difference, a mental illness?

“Mental Illness”, genius, guilt, depression, joy, excitement, emotions, mystery, history and thousands of variables in 3-D technicolor are all part of our minds. Explore those potentials.

the worlds getting sicker, envimentaly, as well as human behavior. to rid the world of disease we must first rid the world of whats evil , sounds easy?

    robertgrist

What is not loving is evil.

Is there more diabetes? is there more cancer? is there more altzheimers? is there more heart disease?  ... people live longer. diagnoses are better. there's more of everything.

We need a population of astronauts in space as their primary occupation far more than on the planet. Population density here in 200 years without an intensely populated space program would make our world an on-going disastrous loss of human life.

One of the reasons is there is more light shed on the problem, which makes it appear there is more mental illness. If a person glances through a DSM IV, one of the diagnostic tools used to determine mental illness, everyone could find at least traces of mental illness within themselves.

Some mental illness is the result of poor diet, but much more is the result of the inabilility to correctly cope with childhood experiences. If more people would spend a few sessions with a good psychologist each year, they would be less  tormented with the resulting, out of control ,disturbing reactions they consistently experience throughout their lives.

Stress and pressure of day to day living, has alot to do with it also.

I think psychologists are good for children and teenagers. As a person gets older they may just go crazy paying someone to act like a friend.
That's how it was for me anyway. Dam psychologist tried to date me. She was a woman and that confused my situation even more. No psychologists for itsmee.

To Freedom Fighter - - --they took homosexuality of the list of mental disorders in the DSM I V because so many of the psychiatrists or their kids are homosexual

You’re asking as if it were a sudden increase that it’s here. It’s always been here and in a great a number, at one time “people just didn’t talk about it”.  Now the world has education and the ability to recognize and understand - though a lot of folks won’t do it - mental illness…….

The statical indicators on every subject forms a graphical Bell-Curve of responses. "Normal" is the center of the Bell-curve. The number of persons outside the normative range in enough of their responses are in some form of "not-normal" status. They could be a genius in any of several categories or incapacitated in several categories. There is nothing plane and simple about non-normative behavior.

There are many ways of landing in the governments favor and thus be supported by some form of compensation. Not everyone with mad-money is insane. Witness protection has used this support method. Also, the folk who decided to wipe out a pacific island without removing the residential protesters became so guilt ridden by their intentional neglect that the US stopped testing nukes on islands in the Pacific. Those folks who supported the bombing were disabled with guilt and many have not recovered to return to work. An awareness of national secrets that you may choose not to work with, on moral grounds, could land you on the dole and unemployable...like me.

    FISH-O

That 'moral ground ' thing sends many a person into a spin.

I am a bit of a flip seeing this subject brought to light after so long. I am betting not many people out there remember this blatant act of brutality vomited forth on planet earth and all of it's inhabitants.

    Sick.
    robertgrist

The "moral grounds" filler is usually a cover-all against the "military draft" and sullied into a range of dodgers to be replaced with "conscientious objector". It served it's purpose as a moral high ground until it's use went to the "brutal vomit-ers"
    FISH-O

Hmmmm. To object with conscience is wrong and to walk blindly is correct. ... One more reason to vote.

NOT MENT TO TO DOWN PLAY ANY ILLNESS BUT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF PARENTS TELLING THERE CHILDREN TO FAIL TEST SO THEY COULD GET LARGER CHECKS AND INSURANCE ANDDISSABILITY FRAUD ARE BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRIES IN THIS COUNTRY

    robertgrist

I have known folk who were seeking welfare by false pretenses and other methods dishonestly. The courts penalize fraud harshly.

WE HAVE ALOT OF MENTAL ILLNESS BECAUSE YOU CAN GET A FEDERAL CHECK MONTHLY IF THE CHECKS STOPPED MANY FOLKS WOULD BE CURED INSTANTLY

    itsmee

dwayne - you think schizophrenia can be cured by denying a check?!
i'm surprised by your answer ... almost shocked. do you think cancer can be cured by denying a check?
i am wondering ... how old are you. (pardon, that was a rude question. it's kinda like asking, 'how much do you weigh?"
    FISH-O

This is a very harsh and unrealistic way of looking upon mental illness. I imagine that every single person in your family struggles with nothing mentally at all. You are truly blessed.
